Since version 11, the image-model landscape shifted in three structural ways rather than through any single release. This section records those shifts as of late July 2026.
Meta entered. On July 7, 2026, Meta Superintelligence Labs launched Muse Image, its first image model, a frontier-class model that it put in front of billions of users at once. It is 'agentic,' pairing with Meta's Muse Spark language model to reason, web-search, and plan a layout before rendering. It ships free with usage caps inside the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories, and WhatsApp, which put a frontier-class model in front of billions of users overnight. A companion Muse Video was previewed on the same base. Meta drew immediate criticism over training on user photos.
The open-weights wave. Three serious open-weight releases landed in a five-week span. Ideogram 4.0, on June 3, is a 9.3-billion-parameter open-weight model with a novel structured-JSON prompting scheme that places elements with pixel-precise bounding boxes; it topped DesignArena among open-weight models. Krea 2, in mid-June, is Krea's first from-scratch foundation model, a 12.9-billion-parameter DiT released in a LoRA-trainable 'Raw' variant and a distilled 'Turbo' variant that renders a 2K image in about two seconds on consumer hardware. HiDream-O1, on May 8, is an MIT-licensed, pixel-native unified transformer with no VAE and no separate text encoder that claims to beat the much larger FLUX.2 on standard benchmarks. The message of the quarter was that the quality gap between open weights and closed flagships kept narrowing.
Google retired a brand. Google formally began sunsetting the Imagen family, with its API endpoints scheduled to shut down through August 2026 and the official migration path pointing to the Gemini-based Nano Banana image models. A new Nano Banana 2 Lite, on June 30, became the fastest and cheapest tier at roughly four seconds and about three cents per image, sitting below Nano Banana 2 and the 4K-capable Nano Banana Pro. The Imagen name, which anchored Google's image efforts for years, is being folded into the Gemini banner.
Alibaba reversed course. In a notable counter-trend, Alibaba released Qwen-Image-3.0 on July 21 with no benchmarks, no model card, no parameter count, and no downloadable weights, a sharp break from its earlier open Qwen-Image releases and widely read as a shift toward closed flagships.
The leaderboard, as of this writing. OpenAI's GPT-Image-2, which opened to developers in early May, held the number-one position on the Artificial Analysis text-to-image arena through July, with Meta's Muse Image, Google's Gemini image models, Recraft V4.1, and the open-weight releases filling out the top tier. Recraft V4.1, on May 14, briefly claimed the top spot outside Google and OpenAI, but by late July it had been passed on the Artificial Analysis arena by Reve 2.1 and Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.5. The tier just below the two giants is now its own fast-moving race.
